What is a database?

In the broadest sense, a database is anything that stores data.  For example, a telephone directory could be described as a database.   It stores related pieces of information such as name, address, and phone number.  However, in the world of computers, a database usually refers to a collection of related pieces of information stored electronically.  A database can also interface with other computer programs so that information can be rapidly retrieved and updated.

Microsoft Access Databases

One of the most widely used databases is the Microsoft Access database (Access).  Access is an extremely useful and capable database that is  suitable for use in many office and business situations.  An Access database can be used to efficiently store, view and update many types of information, such as customer, stock, and transaction records. Our team has extensive knowledge and experience of developing Access for use with both web based applications, and with stand-alone or networked computers.  We are able to custom design easy to use forms and reports to suit your exact requirements.  Our forms will minimize the time that you or your customers spend entering information.  We can design sophisticated reports that will sort and group information so that you have meaningful and effective reports for your business.  We can provide various security levels from full read/write access to all information down to read-only access to selected information.

What is a spreadsheet?

Traditionally, a spreadsheet is a table of data arranged in rows and columns.  Often these values will have predefined relationships to each other.  For example, the balance sheet compiled by an accountant is a spreadsheet.  In the world of computers a spreadsheet application is a computer program that allows you to create and manipulate spreadsheets electronically.  In a spreadsheet application, each value sits in a cell.  You can define the type of data that is in each cell and specify how different cells depend upon one another.

Microsoft Excel

Probably the most famous and widely used spreadsheet application is Microsoft Excel (Excel). This is a powerful tool that enables you to store and process your  data, and display the data in the form of charts and graphs.  Excel is multidimensional, meaning that one spreadsheet can be linked to another.  A change made in one spreadsheet can then update other spreadsheets.

Our Expertise

The key to handling data with computers is to consider the whole process.  Our team have a wealth of experience developing solutions using Access and Excel combined with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA, a programming language that allows the capability of Access and Excel to be extended).  We take the time and trouble to fully understand your requirement.  This allows us to design an efficient system tailored to your needs where, for example, a customer's details, only ever have to be entered once.

We are able to create easy to use Wizards with VBA forms that will speed up the information entry process and provide data validation at the time of entry.  With our help your business could use pre-designed forms for tasks such as customer records, invoices, staff time sheets, and expenses.  We can design templates that will automatically perform advanced calculations as data is entered.

We would be pleased to discuss your requirements and to assist you to streamline your data entry processes.
